Indigenous Services Canada to close weeks early
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) announced in a press release Thursday that Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) would stop taking clients and visitors on March 10, weeks ahead of the previously stated March 31 exit date.
The Eastern Door first reported in February of last year that ISC would be leaving Kahnawake.
“I have to say this is very unfortunate news, as we were previously informed that the office would close on March 31. At no time were we given any indication that the office would close to our community members before that date,” said MCK grand chief Cody Diabo in the press release.
According to the MCK, ISC’s Quebec regional director gave them notice of the change late Wednesday, by way of email.
ISC said it would be posting a formal notice of the change on the doors of its Kahnawake office by the end of the week.
Executive operations officer Alan John Rice said that the MCK will continue to look for alternatives to keep ISC services available in town rather than having to travel to Montreal to get them.
After the move, ISC will operate in the Guy-Favreau complex near Place des Arts in Montreal.
