Calls for ABC board
One community member has been elected by acclamation to the Alcoholic Beverages Control Board (ABC), leaving six seats still vacant that will be open for nominations until Saturday, September 6.
nwas the sole candidate for the election held last Saturday, making her the only member of the ABC board, which oversees the sale, distribution, and production of alcohol in Kahnawake.
The board was established to enact the Alcoholic Beverages Control Law back in 1995, and is tasked with creating and implementing regulations related to the law.

Alone, Jacobs can’t fulfil the mandate of the board, as there’s a minimum quorum of five, meaning at least four other candidates must join.
The official nomination day will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on September 6 at the Golden Age Club, with community members asked to complete nomination packages on-site or drop off completed packages to the electoral officer, Marnie Jacobs, or assistant, Lindsay Leborgne.
The election will take place on Saturday, October 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. also at the Golden Age Club.
Nominees for the board must be listed on the Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Registry, be at least 18 years old, and have no direct or indirect interests in any enterprise that manufactures, distributes, transports, or sells alcoholic beverages within Kahnawake. They must also be willing to be presented to the community as a candidate, be nominated and seconded by two community members, and be willing to serve a two-year term in office.
