Summer Student Scoop: The wonderful medium of film, etc

Sha’niénhawe Diabo

From a young age, I’ve been watching a lot of movies, ranging from films like Toy Story to Lord of the Rings. My parents said I was a weird baby, I wouldn’t cry often, but I would sit through movies.

As stated by my parents, the first movie I ever saw was Where The Wild Things Are. It’s loosely based on the book of the same name. I don’t remember it and I haven’t seen it in some time. It came out when I was really young, just a few months old, but my parents said I barely cried.

When I was younger the intros at the movie theatre made these loud sounds. Too loud for me, and I never liked that. I have a problem with overly loud sounds, and I found the movie theatre always had loud sounds just to be loud.

There was always this anxiousness going to the movies but other than that little part, it’s been some of my favourite memories. Just going to the movies is a little treat in my family.

The theatre used to be my favourite place to watch movies but recently I’ve been realizing my home system is the best. Just a little rant about movie theatres. I’m no longer a fan but man, the memories there were amazing. They’re such a wonder when you’re younger.

While the place where I watch movies doesn’t matter, the actual films themselves are amazing. Filmmaking is such an interesting job. To me the medium of film is such an interesting way to present a media. It has to be different.

Books and movies are completely different. With movies it’s easier to show motion but with books it’s easier to show intention or thoughts. I’ve had a hard time figuring out people’s emotions through body language and such but that’s, to me, why I like movies.

It’s like a little game of what are they thinking. Trying to figure out the character. I’ve found in recent movies, characters are just explained to the audience or, for example, an evil character who’s said to be super evil but doesn’t do evil things.

As the audience we need to seem him doing evil things, we can’t be told he’s evil and expect people to go with it. Showing the audience he’s evil has more impact than characters being scared of him, for example.

Just a little rant about how some people don’t use the medium of film to its full extent. It’s more recently. Also, the increase of quick cash grab live action re-releases angers me. With the millions of dollars no one can make an original idea…

To stay away from the negative and another rant, I would like to include some movies I’ve really enjoyed, movies such as: Doctor Sleep, Logan, Fight Club, and Donnie Darko.

Doctor Sleep is the sequel to Stephen King’s famous novel and Stanley Kubrick’s movie of the same name, The Shining. It takes place way after the events of The Shining.

Danny, now older, has to learn to embrace his gift (the shining) to help save a little girl who also has the shining from a Caravan of psychic vampires who feed on children with the shining.

What I love the most about this movie is how it is so close to Indigenous culture. As an Indigenous person it was both really interesting to see, but also scarily close.

Logan is about Marvel’s Wolverine trying to help a girl with mutant powers reach a group of other children mutants who are trying to pass into Canada. In this world, mutants are being hunted because they’re “different” from “normal” people. It’s a very interesting movie and it’s best to watch the movie with as little info as possible.

Logan is an emotional rollercoaster. I love it so much. In order to watch it, one might need a bit of information on X-Men but there’s no need to extensively read or watch other marvel movies/comics.

While the other two movies, Fight Club and Donnie Darko, are amazing movies, they’re better off unexplained. They’re best watched with no information going in.

I really do enjoy watching movies. It’s one of my favourite mediums to enjoy. My brain works better with focusing on what’s happening than imagining what’s happening. While I still really like books, movies are easier for me to understand and comprehend.
