Our top Christmas flicks
We can no longer deny it – winter is here. It’s cold, it’s dark, and it’s the perfect time to cozy up by the Christmas tree with a blanket and cup of hot chocolate and watch the snow as it gently falls. Or better yet, grab that remote to turn on a holiday classic.
Here’s what staff at The Eastern Door and Sharing Our Stories had to say about their all-time favourites.
Elf
My favourite holiday film is Elf, because it's really funny. It's timeless, and I watch it over and over, and the kids love it now too. So I’m passing that down now, generation to generation.
–Steve Bonspiel
I love Will Ferrell’s ridiculousness, like when he screams “OMG! It’s Santa! I know him!” That and his innocence and love for all things Christmas.
–Onawa Krystal Jacobs
Home Alone
My favorite holiday film is Home Alone, probably the first one. The second one is still fabulous, but the first one is definitely where it's at. It's just… it's just a perfect holiday film, you know? It showcases everything, from the meaning of Christmas to the child wonder that Kevin has. It also teaches a lesson. Kevin wants to be away from his family, but then he learns that family is everything. Also, it’s a comedy masterpiece. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are just brilliant together. Everything, like all those iconic scenes, him sliding down the stairs to the traps that he sets up in the house, Home Alone is just a pure masterpiece.

Die Hard
I watch Die Hard every year, and it's one of my favourite movies ever, let alone my favourite Christmas movie. As a kid, it was good to see the bad guy get it in the end, and seeing the hero never give up was inspiring. It's never a bad thing to have Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman share the screen!

Charlie Brown Christmas
The Charlie Brown Christmas special has a great message and one of the best soundtracks of all time, so I've got to go with that. I appreciate Charlie Brown's unpopular effort to spurn the commercialism of the holiday season. I love when he picks the worst, saddest tree of the lot and sees the best in it, to the chagrin of all. And the last song is really sublime. Apparently the network thought it was going to flop, but it still gets love every year, and with good reason. I think a lot of people yearn for a less materialistic world. That said, I bought the soundtrack on vinyl twice.

Grumpy Old Men
Grumpy Old Men is my favourite Christmas movie because it’s got it all – it’s festive, funny, heartwarming, and emotional! Jack Lemmon is always hysterical, and once you’re done with it you can immediately watch the sequel.
