The holiday parade returned to Kahnawake on Saturday, with Kahnawà:ke Shakotiia’takéhnhas Community Services (KSCS) taking the reins for the first time after the popular event didn’t move forward last year due to a lack of participation.

The heat was intense this week, with temperatures reaching well into the 30s, and humidex of 40 C. To help the community avoid heat-related illnesses, Kahnawà:ke Shakotiia’takehnhas Community Services (KSCS) opened up the Turtle Bay Elders’ Lodge for the community to serve as a cooling shelter during the sweltering weather.

As the August days pass, the inevitable reality of school starting up again begins to set in. 

Eight weeks have come and gone. With that, I look back on the time I spent as a summer student with The Eastern Door.

Starcatcher Productions, a theatre company serving Kahnawake and Chateauguay with members from both communities, is setting up its production of Little Women at the Centaur Theatre in Montreal.

The Quebec U23 girl’s softball team has come home with another win. While not the gold, they achieved a silver medal at the Canadian National Softball Championship, held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

At 39 years old, Leya Jacobs has proven that school can come a little later. She studied special care counselling at Champlain College St. Lambert, finishing up a 22-month course in just nine months.

Kwe, welcome back to another Summer Student Scoop column! Before I talk about the main topic, I want to talk about two movies I’ve seen recently. Over the past few weeks, I’ve seen both the new Superman and the new Fantastic 4.

Another community member is done with university. Kiana Cross has graduated from Concordia University with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in communications studies.

Kahnawake’s first backyard ultra, The Meltdown, generated $2,000 for the Purple Ribbon Walk over the past weekend.
