Sober driving initiative is back

Marcus Bankuti The Eastern Door

For those whose egg nog is a little extra festive this holiday season, a safe ride home is just a phone call away.

The popular Kahnawake Shakotiia'takehnhas Community Services (KSCS) Sober Driver Services program is back offering free rides every Friday and Saturday this month and on New Year’s Eve, no questions asked.

“This initiative is all about ensuring everyone can enjoy the holiday season safely, and we’re proud to be part of that effort,” said Tish Pungartnik, who leads communications for KSCS.

Kahnawake residents looking for a safe ride home after consuming alcohol in town can call the service to get a lift from a pair of volunteers. If it’s feasible, callers might even have the option to be driven home in their own car.

“We want to do everything we can to ensure that Kahnawake remains a safe and supportive community, especially when people are out celebrating,” said Pungartnik.

A committee of KSCS staff, two regular drivers, and additional volunteers are behind the effort, which has been honed along the way.

“One of the major lessons has been the importance of awareness and outreach, which is why we’re actively working with local establishments to make sure they have the information they need to refer people to the service," said Pungartnik, adding the initiative has also worked to fine-tune its efficiency to provide timely rides.

The program has been a hit with Kahnawa’kehró:non. Last December, the program answered 158 calls, driving home nearly 250 passengers.

“Any effort by our community to encourage a person not to get behind the wheel after drinking is appreciated and respected,” said community member Sheridan Ross, who noted that although she has never used the service personally, it can help keep everyone safe.

“Our roads are already tough enough to navigate with traffic flow and winter conditions,” said Ross. “Intoxicated driving unnecessarily adds to the danger.”

Pungartnik suggested everyone can play a role in a safe holiday season, when many people tend to indulge in alcohol.

“A good tip is to always plan ahead if you know you’ll be drinking - either arrange a safe ride home or consider using our sober driving service,” said Pungartnik. “If you’re at a social club or bar, encourage others to think about how they’re getting home as well. Community support is key to keeping everyone safe.”

Pungartnik urges people who choose to use the service to be respectful to the drivers, noting harassment will not be tolerated.

“The service is here to help, and we ask the community to support it by showing appreciation for the drivers who generously give their time,” she said.

The service is available from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights in December as well as New Year’s Eve. The service can be reached at 514-518-1204 or 438-227-6065 those nights.
