The Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre (KMHC) is managing an ongoing outbreak of COVID-19, with a total of eight patients testing positive for the illness since the outbreak was declared on December 29.

When you work at a newspaper, every week is memorable. Just a quick glance at a front page from months ago can bring back a flood of memories. But while every week is distinct, the year can be a blur when you think of how fast 52 weeks go by.

As 2025 draws to a close and we prepare to welcome 2026, The Eastern Door staff took a look back at the last 12 months of news in Kahnawake. And, as we find ourselves saying every year, what a year it has been! From major arts projects for some of Kahnawake’s finest acting talent to community protests about cannabis and traffic, we’ve recapped it all below.

Part of the Leblanc factory on Route 207 was destroyed by a fire on Wednesday evening, according to local authorities, but there were no injuries.

A fire was reported last Friday at a Kanesatake home where a shooting took place a week earlier.

The suspension of the Mohawk Council of Kanesatake (MCK) elections was easily one of the biggest local stories of the year, but there was plenty more taking place in Kanesatake/Kanehsatake in 2025.

Anyone who has set foot in a non-Native school in this province - or even just seen the ignorant comments from some of Kahnawake’s neighbours rage-posting in traffic jams - knows that education about Indigenous issues in this country gets a big fat F-minus.
