Recycling to move bi-weekly

Starting in January 2026, community members will have their recycling picked up every two weeks instead of weekly, a change that will affect all residential areas in Kahnawake.

The move is coming about as part of the Modernization Recycling Collection Initiative, a project by Eco Enterprises Quebec, a non-profit organization that works to lead curbside collection and processing of recyclable materials to ensure the process is done in the most efficient way possible.

In press release this week, the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) said the change is part of an ongoing effort to be “more cost-effective, fuel-efficient, and environmentally friendly.”

While there will be fewer regular pickups, households that have too much recycling waste in a two-week period for just one bin will be permitted to obtain an additional blue bin. To request an additional bin, community members can contact Waste Management at 450-632-4321, where more information can also be obtained about the change.

Community members should note that this change only applies to recycling collections, and that special collections and compost will continue to be picked up on a weekly basis.

A full list of items that belong in the blue recycling bin can be found on the Waste Management section of the MCK website, and includes items like newspapers, some types of plastic containers, metal cans, lids, and caps, and glass jars and bottles.

Recyclable plastic containers should be those imprinted with codes one to seven, and food packaging can only be recycled if it is imprinted with code six.
