Perron joins health portfolio
Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) chief Tonya Perron has been added to the health portfolio, taking over from MCK grand chief Cody Diabo in managing oversight of health-related projects in the community.
The reshuffle will allow Diabo to focus more time on other growing files, while Perron will be able to assist with issues such as the uncertainty surrounding Bill 2, a controversial piece of legislation that will change the way doctors will be paid in Quebec.
MCK chief Arnold Boyer, who leads the health portfolio, has expressed concern about how the bill could affect the community, and Perron said her background in law will be valuable to navigating how that legislation will play out in Kahnawake.
“I think it’ll be an interesting portfolio for me, with the perspective I can bring to it, both with my knowledge and experience as a lawyer and also just the knowledge I have from generally living in the community and knowing all of the health issues related to services and programs,” Perron said.
“I think we need some more political involvement, and I’m hoping I can contribute in that way.”
The health portfolio is also overseen by MCK chief Stephen McComber.
Perron will continue to be the lead portfolio chief on the justice and MCK governance portfolios, as well as a portfolio chief on administrative affairs, legislation, and regulatory boards/commissions and labour.
