Public Safety restructured

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) Public Safety Unit is shaking things up by drawing an operational distinction between safety and security issues.

The change was under consideration for years, according to Robyn Montour, formerly the general manager of Public Safety. She has been named the department’s director in the move.

“I am looking forward to continuing the work within the community and working with the Council and all the key stakeholders to really enhance public safety in the community,” Montour said.

“The split will give both sectors the opportunity to focus on enhancing both safety and security.”

As director of Public Safety, Montour will work on developing policies and procedures to promote community safety. Her purview will include Animal Control, safety inspections, and landfill.

Montour has been with the department since June 2019 and played a significant role in the community’s COVID-19 pandemic emergency response early in her tenure.

Public Safety commissioner Lloyd Philips will continue in his position with a focus on public security.

The two will take a collaborative approach, according to Montour.

“I will continue to work with the commissioner on certain files, and we will work jointly on the bigger emergency preparedness and planning development and response throughout the community,” she said.
