The Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP) announced in a press release on October 28 that no criminal charges would be laid against a Kahnawake Peacekeeper involved in an arrest on July 1, 2024, that left a man unconscious.
According to its website, “the DPCP provides, on behalf of the State, a criminal and penal prosecution service free from any political considerations, in order to preserve the integrity of the judicial process while ensuring the protection of society, in the pursuit of the interests of justice and the public interest, as well as in respect of the rule of law and the legitimate interests of independent victims and witnesses.”
It is an independent body from the provincial government.
Both the DPCP in their press release and Peacekeepers spokesperson Kyle Zachary said that they cannot comment further on the case.
“We can’t comment on the file itself because it’s still before the courts,” said Zachary.
“We welcome checks and balances, as they are very important for police and our relationship with the community we serve. We welcome them and fully cooperate when needed.”
The DPCP, for their part, said in the press release that a rundown of the events during this arrest will be released once the matter is settled in court.
