Kahnawa’kehró:non asked to conserve water

As the ongoing heatwave affecting Kahnawake and the rest of the northeast continues, and with little rainfall on the horizon, the Public Works Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) is asking the community to conserve water.

The MCK asked community members in an August 14 press release to avoid non-essential usage of water, including watering lawns, washing vehicles, and filling swimming pools.

While Public Works specified that there is no shortage of water in Kahnawake, continued dry conditions could lead to “supply challenges.”

The water level in the St. Lawrence river currently sits 60 CM below the seasonal median, the lowest it’s been in four years.

Martin Morris, director of the Public Works Unit, gave an example of a challenge that could be faced by the unit if a water shortage occurs.

“Less water means less dilution, so everything that is industrial discharge, sewer discharge, will of course be more concentrated in the raw water that we take into our plant and make the treatments more difficult,” he said.

“We urge all residents to take these conservation efforts seriously. Community cooperation is vital during this challenging period.”
