Judicial review sought on cannabis permit

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) has been served with a Federal Court filing by a community member, who has submitted a notice of application against the MCK and the Kahnawake Cannabis Control Board (KCCB).

The filing, which was unable to be viewed by The Eastern Door before press-time, was made by a community member doing business as “The Kannabis Shop.”

That business was allegedly denied a standard processing licence by the KCCB, and the filing requests the Federal Court conduct a judicial review of that decision.

In a press release published yesterday, the MCK said it “strongly refutes allegations set out in the application and will take all necessary steps to oppose the proceedings.

“This matter goes beyond a single application as it speaks to the integrity and authority of our community-led regulatory process,” the press release reads. “The MCK will continue to uphold and defend Kahnawake’s jurisdiction and decision-making authority in all matters concerning our territory.”

The MCK also added that it will not be able to provide further comment on the matter, since the issue is now before the courts.
