Cheques for the one-time $500 inflation benefit are being postdated to Wednesday, May 27, the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) has announced.

The MCK decided to postdate the cheques, which were initially slated to be distributed throughout April and May prior to a clerical delay, out of fairness. This way, everyone who applied for the benefit by the deadline will receive the funds at the same time.

On Tuesday, the MCK said the postdated cheques would “begin to be mailed out in the coming days.”

Kahnawa’kehró:non who applied after the deadline can expect to receive their payments at the end of summer.

“MCK appreciates the community’s patience and understanding as this process is completed,” reads the press release.

The one-time benefit, which was announced early this year, is being financed with gaming revenues and seeks to ease the burden of a rapidly increasing cost of living.
