Trunk or Treat returns to Kanesatake

After last year marked the community’s first Trunk or Treat, the Mohawk Council of Kanesatake (MCK) is bringing back the event this Halloween, hoping it can grow to become a festive staple.

“The goal is to be there for the community in whatever way we can,” said MCK chief Amy Beauvais. “For Halloween, the best way to be there is for the kids and their trick-or-treating, making sure we can help get that done in a safer manner.”

Beauvais said that an increase in traffic in the community in recent years means that an event like this is not only convenient, but a matter of safety for community children.

Unlike last year, businesses are welcome at this year’s event, although shops are asked to keep their displays kid-friendly – meaning no iconography such as cannabis leaves. Beauvais is hoping the change will boost the number of trunks at this year’s event.

“Last year we had three individuals, and this year we’d like to have more, so there’s a lot of little stops for the kids to go and pick up candy,” she said.

Other changes include music on site and more valuable prizes for the three best-decorated trunks.

“They were all very, very beautiful,” said Beauvais of last year’s displays. “It was hard. I couldn’t pick. I had to ask a trick-or-treater to pick for me because they were all beautiful.”

Registration for community members or businesses looking to participate are asked to register by via QR code by noon on October 29, but they can also register at the event.

Beauvais said participants should prepare for 200 visitors, the goal for this year’s festivities.

Trunk or Treat will take place at the Ratihén:te High School parking lot from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Halloween, October 31, with participating vehicles asked to arrive by 4:30 p.m.
