Kahnawake’s New Year’s Eve Sobriety Powwow is returning for its third year, this time in a bigger location to accommodate the hundreds of people who are choosing to ring in the new year without drugs or alcohol.
This year’s event will take place at Mohawk Bingo, with doors opening at 5 p.m. and Grand Entry starting at 6 p.m. Attendees can watch smoke dance specials, as well as jingle, fancy shawl, traditional, and grass dances until around 1 a.m., with prize money up for grabs in all categories.
“I’m really excited about it, I really try to bring positivity and make the best of giving back to the community that’s accepted me as a guest here,” said Don Barnaby, who is Mi’kmaq. “I want to give back and I know that giving is promoting wellness and promoting sobriety.”
The host drum for the night will be the Wabanaki Confederacy, with the Old Stone Singers coming from Ottawa to take on the role of guest drum. The evening will be led by Lance Delisle as emcee, as well as George Trapper as arena director and Kaiewate Jacobs as head judge.
The event has been able to grow in size thanks to community support and sponsorship from Kahnawake Shakotiia’takehnhas Community Services (KSCS), which is covering all the costs of the event. Powwow food will also be available all night - instead of alcohol, attendees can enjoy strawberry juice and all of their favourite snacks.
“I want this to be a safe space for families to attend together, where people can come and make these beautiful memories and welcome in the New Year,” Barnaby said.
