Rotiwennakéhte Elementary School students gathered in their gym this week to cheer on Canada’s men’s and women’s Olympic hockey teams.
Nine-year-olds Jonah Diabo and Kayden Canatonquin and 10-year-olds Meagan Daoust and Avery Cross shared how much fun it was to watch the games alongside their friends.
Their favourite moments included watching the Canadian team score and the occasional skirmishes on the ice.
“My favourite part was when that guy got a breakaway and scored!” said Canatonquin.
When asked if they were going to be hockey Olympians one day, the group responded with a resounding yes.
“The Olympics only happen every few years, it was really nice to see them share this experience together with their school community,” said Melissa McGregor, the elementary school principal. “They learn about the Olympics in class, but now they get to see it, feel it and be part of the energy of rooting for a team and country.
“There was non-stop cheering as the students rooted for Team Canada and their favourite players,” said McGregor, who credited the school’s gym teacher, Ralph Leblanc, for the idea of screening the games.
