Police conduct safety checks
Police officers installed a checkpoint and pulled over trucks, including at least one dump truck, on Highway 640 near the Oka Park entry on April 15, as part of a large road safety operation targeting heavy vehicles.
The Controle routier Quebec (CRQ) also intervened in this incident at the SQ’s request, according to CRQ spokesperson Lt Jonathan Beauvais.
On April 15, the SQ and municipal police forces did checks to address problematic behaviours with heavy vehicles drivers, since these vehicles are involved in a large portion of road accidents.
Heavy vehicles - those weighing 4,500 kg or more - represent only 2.9 percent of vehicles on the road but are involved in 25.7 percent of fatal collisions and more than 15 percent of serious collisions, according to a press release by the SQ.
The road safety operation this past week focused on the causes of collisions involving heavy vehicles, including failure to comply with traffic rules, speeding, following too closely, inadequate driving skills, and distracted driving, according to the release.
The operation is part of the SQ’s transportation network safety strategy, “Human Life at the Heart of Our Actions,” which aims to reduce road fatalities and injuries.
