Inflation benefit delayed

The one-time Inflationary Benefit Payment slated for this spring will be slightly delayed, the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) announced last week.

The one-time benefit will see all individuals on the Kahnawà:ke Kanien’kehá:ka Registry (KKR) above the age of 18 entitled to a $500 benefit, made possible thanks to revenue from gaming.

While the benefit was originally expected to be made available to community members throughout April and into May, payments are now expected to be disbursed throughout the month, with all payments scheduled to be fully issued before June 1.

The delay is due to MCK taking an extended period of time to contact and confirm incorrect or missing information with applicants - once all information is confirmed, an exact issuance date will be announced for disbursement.

Around $2.8 million will be paid to community members via the benefit. The money comes from gaming revenue, which has been a major contributor to Kahnawake’s overall own-source revenue, distinct from funding that comes from the federal and provincial government to fund services in town.
