Huge dub for Quebec softball

The Quebec U23 girl’s softball team has come home with another win. While not the gold, they achieved a silver medal at the Canadian National Softball Championship, held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

“I am very proud about the silver medal. I am, of course, a little bit disappointed about not getting gold, but this is the best my team has ever done at the Canadian Championships,” said Emily Meloche. “I have two bronze medals from past years at this tournament so it’s nice to have a different colour this year. Also, the team who won gold is a very strong team and we held them off until the last few innings.”

“I really enjoyed the tournament. The competition was the best we had seen all year with multiple girls having played for team Canada in the past. Mostly all the games could have gone either way,” continued Meloche.

Bonnie Zachary, a team member, shared the same sentiments. “I really enjoyed playing this tournament because all of the games were pretty close. It was a week full of good softball,” said Zachary, whose team was pitted against seven teams from all over Canada.

“My favourite, and the most memorable moments, were winning the semi-finals, which assured either the gold or silver medal; and just playing hacky sack with my teammates between games,” said Meloche.

“My most memorable moment for me was making the all-star team for the tournament. I was named all-star outfielder, which was really exciting for me,” said Zachary.

This is the last tournament for the U23 Quebec Girl’s softball team this year and both players are still thinking of their future in softball.

“I do play on the club softball team at Syracuse (University), but as for team Quebec I am unsure whether or not I will play again next summer,” said Meloche. “My decision mostly depends on my friends’ decisions. Although I love the sport and the competitiveness, the main reason I play now is for the social aspect. I hope we do play again next year so we can finally bring home the gold.”

“Our season is now over, and I am currently undecided about coming back to play at this level. On one end I love it and i always have a good time, so we’ll see if next season is in the cards for me,” said Zachary.

“Proud of her, silver is amazing in a tournament of this calibre. They did better than they did last year when they won bronze. She finished the tournament healthy, and as a mom that’s all I want. For her to have fun, do her best, stay healthy. A medal is a bonus,” said Valerie Horn, Zachary’s mother.
