Faces and voices of the powwow
Kahnawa’kehró:non photographer Martin Akwiranoron Loft was at the Echoes of a Proud Nation Pow-Wow this weekend, where he asked some of the visitors their thoughts on the annual celebration of life and culture in Kahnawake. Here is what some of the people who made their way to Tekakwitha Island had to say.

“I’ve been coming to the powwow since the beginning, right after the Crisis in 1991. I’m proud of the singers and dancers, because they teach the people about the culture and help them find peace.”

“I come to the powwow to see all my friends. And while I’m here, I might as well sell some of my designs. Many of my customers come back year after year. After all, Kahnawake is my second home because I lived here for 20 years.”

“I’ve been coming to the Kahnawake powwow for 10 years. It’s always nice to see all the people, vendors, and dancers. And it’s getting bigger and bigger each year. It’s also nice to see outsiders enjoying themselves.”
