Alcohol board ready to go

Following repeated nomination days for the Alcoholic Beverages Control (ABC) Board, the body is preparing for onboarding after the latest nominations rounded out the seven-member board.

“It took three rounds of nominations, but it looks good,” said electoral officer Marnie Jacobs. “We have a whole new board, and I just wish them nothing but the best luck. I’m confident that with having fresh, new people on the board that good things will come out of it in a positive manner in our community.”

An election scheduled for October 4 has been rendered unnecessary after the September 13 nomination day yielded two nominations for the last two vacant seats, resulting in Wendy Mayo and Wahienhtha Jacobs being elected by acclamation, according to a Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) press release.

On September 6, Nihawennaa Lahache McComber, Caroline Cook, Blue Sky, and Bradley Thomas were named to the board by acclamation.

The first nomination day, August 16, yielded one board member, Evelyn Jacobs.

A term of office is two years on the ABC Board, which regulates Kahnawake’s alcohol industry, including manufacturing, possession, transportation, and sale.
