Kahnawake now has a residency compliance officer. That is, someone who’ll take on the role of filing eviction orders to the Court of the Kahnawake. The community has already had an eviction law in place since last year, but up until now it’s been unenforceable.

Hidden cameras have been set up along Seaway Road in the hope of deterring illegal dumping. Council chief Jeremiah Johnson said visible ones will also soon be put up on the telephone poles at the entrance of the road too.

Quebec Native Women (QNW) and the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal (NWSM) are teaming up to create a new province-wide map that’ll compile the stories of those affected by the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people. A two-day long event will be hosted at the Golden Age Club in town next week to encourage families in Kahnawake to participate in particular.

Two decision makers have been selected to run Kahnawake’s long-awaited Administrative Tribunal. They are Brandon Montour, a local, and Aubrey Charette, a lawyer from Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation currently based in Ottawa.
