Twin Flames part ways

The musical duo Twin Flames are parting ways professionally and personally, an announcement that comes after one half of the group, Jaaji Okpik, was charged with seven offences, including sexual assault, earlier this year.

The charges relate to Okpik’s time as a police officer in Nunavik in the early 2000s. Charges include sexual assault and sexual exploitation of a teenage girl in a relationship of dependency or authority, as well as unlawful confinement.

Okpik, who is also known as Sunchild (George) Deer-Okpik, is Mohawk-Inuk. His biological father is from Kahnawake, where he spent his summers, and he grew up in the Inuit community of Quaqtaq, Nunavik, with his maternal grandparents.

He and Chelsey June were on tour when news of their separation was revealed. The duo had recently won the prestigious Group of the Year award at the Capital Music Awards on May 22, just five days before Okpik’s arrest.

The two shared an emailed statement with The Eastern Door via communications strategist Tieja MacLaughlin.

“After over 10 years of creating music and sharing their lives together, Chelsey June and Jaaji have chosen to part ways personally and professionally. The band Twin Flames will not continue, but the legacy of the music and the connection with audiences will always remain. They extend heartfelt thanks to fans, family, and supporters who have stood by them throughout this journey,” it reads.
