Following the final information session about four proposed community laws, which would be the first ever passed under the new Kanesatake Law-Making Process (KLMP), the community is asked to go online or to the polls to vote on their ratification.
The vote is not to be confused with the Mohawk Council of Kanesatake (MCK) elections, which are taking place two weeks later.
In-person voting for the ratification will take place tomorrow - Saturday, July 19 - from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Ratihén:te High School gym. Kanehsata’kehró:non can also vote online until 8 p.m. on Saturday at OneFeather.ca/nations/kanesatake and clicking on “Sign Up” or “Vote Now.”
The four laws are being voted upon separately. They are the Mohawks of Kanesatake Trespass Law, the Mohawks of Kanesatake Land Protection Law, the Mohawk Council of Kanesatake Code of Ethics, and the Mohawks of Kanesatake State of Emergency and Emergency Measures Law.
A minimum 20 percent voter turnout is required for the result of the vote to be considered valid. A simple majority of those who vote is the benchmark for ratification, as long as the minimum threshold is met.
Monday’s information session was hosted by First Peoples Law, which also drafted the laws. These laws are available for review on the MCK website at kanesatake.ca/wp/governance.
