In honour of the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ People (MMIWG2S+), prime minister Mark Carney received a Sacred Bundle from the National Family and Survivors Circle (NFSC), at a special ceremony in Ottawa attended by Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) chief Melanie Morrison.
“It was done very well, it was very respectful, and I felt that Carney was respectful in his acceptance of it,” said Morrison.
At the ceremony, Carney announced that his government would be providing the NFSC with $2.6 million in funding over three years.
“That funding will help the NFSC to keep putting pressure on the government and entities that have the power to move the Calls for Justice forward, and change the way the process is right now, which will impact the realities of the ever-growing numbers of our missing and murdered women and girls,” Morrison said.
$300,000 towards the Red Dress Alert pilot program.
The Red Dress Alert pilot is being implemented in partnership with the Government of Manitoba and Giganawenimaanaanig, and will mean that members of the public get notified when MMIWG2S+ people go missing.
“Carney said he wants to support these efforts and he acknowledged that it’s a crisis and more needs to be done,” Morrison said. “Once again, we need to see if he follows through, and if he tries to make that difference to help organizations push for the changes that are needed.”
