It doesn’t happen often that you drop in the standings after a win, but that is where the Kahnawake Junior B Hunters find themselves after returning from their week off with a 13-3 win over the Gloucester Griffins on Wednesday.

With an 8-5 record, just six points separate the second-place Kahnawake Hunters from the ninth-place team in the Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League (OJBLL) Eastern Conference, while the Akwesasne Thunder currently hold the top spot with a 14-0 record.

Tuesday’s season-opening contest between the Junior A Whitby Warriors and Mimico Mountaineers wasn’t just the first game of Whitby’s Ontario Junior Lacrosse League (OJLL) season.

The Kahnawake Junior C Hunters went 1-2 over the weekend, with a 9-3 win against the Gloucester Griffins on Saturday breaking up losses to the Cornwall Celtics (12-6) and Nepean Knights (8-7 in overtime).

For the first time, a banner now adorns the rafters of the Kahnawake Sports Complex. And it isn’t just any banner: it is the one marking the Kahnawake Junior B Hunters reaching the highest possible level in their level of lacrosse - and succeeding, winning the team’s first-ever Founder’s Cup last year.

After years of development, Saturday saw the new outdoor rink next to the Kahnawake Sports Complex have its first lacrosse action with two Kahnawake Mohawks Minor Lacrosse Association (KMMLA) all-star games that followed the official opening ceremony and ribbon cutting.

Although the Kahnawake Junior B Hunters are 3-2 at time of writing - they will have played against the Nepean Knights on Thursday night after The Eastern Door’s publishing deadline - the team has not been out of any games, with both losses decided by two or fewer goals.

Last year, it took four games for the Kahnawake Junior C Hunters to get their first-ever regular season win to start their inaugural season. 

Tonight (Friday, April 24), the Kahnawake Junior B Hunters will find out if all their work in the offseason and their three preseason tournament games will have paid off as they take on the Gloucester Griffins at 8 p.m. at the Navan Memorial Centre & Arena.
