A brand-new language program from the Kanien’kehá:ka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa Language and Cultural Center (KOR) launched this month, filling a gap in community programming to help advanced speakers continue to advance their Kanien’kéha proficiency.

Last term, Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) chief Iohahiio Delisle was in a meeting that he found heartbreaking. Karihwanó:ron, the community’s Mohawk immersion elementary school for more than three decades, was full of mold, teaching the language out of an “old cigarette shack” on the cusp of being condemned.

Karonhiaráhstha’s Winter Wonderland has broken fundraising records once again, with the 10th edition of the event raising more than $260,000.

Four winners have been selected to receive scholarships from the Caisse Populaire Kahnawake.  Each year since 2010, students of all kinds, whether high school, CEGEP, vocational studies, university, and the Kanien’kéha Ratiwennahní:rats Adult Immersion Program, are encouraged to submit applications for the scholarships, the winners of which are selected by the bank’s board of directors.  "They basically look at not just academics, but also community involvement, volunteering, arts, sports, and activities,” said Mandie Montour, general manager of the Kahnawake branch of Desjardins.

When Wakenhnhiióhstha Montour left Kanien’kéha Ratiwennahní:rats in 2020, she never expected a belated graduation ceremony would be held four years later, but that’s exactly what happened this past Friday at the Longhouse.  Five former students from the 2020 graduating class took part, using it as a chance to catch up and reminisce about their time spent together at the two-year Kanien’kéha immersion program.
