As 2025 gives way to 2026, Kahnawake is getting one step closer to inaugurating its new multipurpose arts and culture building.

As 2025 draws to a close and we prepare to welcome 2026, The Eastern Door staff took a look back at the last 12 months of news in Kahnawake. And, as we find ourselves saying every year, what a year it has been! From major arts projects for some of Kahnawake’s finest acting talent to community protests about cannabis and traffic, we’ve recapped it all below.

A delegation of Indigenous community members and leadership stood shoulder to shoulder on the tarmac of Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport last Saturday, ready to welcome home more than 60 items being repatriated from the Vatican.

The annual BroadwayWorld Montreal Awards nominees are officially public, and some of Kahnawake’s finest acting talent are amongst those heading up the list.

The recent K1037 radiothon has once again highlighted the power of community and collaboration in Kahnawake. What began as a weekend fundraiser to support the new Kanatahkwèn:ke (where the village is picked up) Cultural Arts Center turned into a record-breaking event, raising over $660,000, well beyond the original target of $200,000.

The weekend saw the community unite in the studios of K1037 and – niá:wen to the magic of radio – in the kitchens, living rooms, and cars of Kahnawake.

The community of Kahnawake is about to take the airwaves for a powerful two-day radiothon fundraiser hosted by K1037 Radio to support the final phase of funding for the new Kahnawake Cultural Arts Center, an ambitious $56 million project that is deeply rooted in the revitalization of Kanien’kehá:ka culture, arts and language.

The latest edition of Iontkahthóhtha, the yearly art show put on by the Kanien’keháka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa Language and Cultural Center (KOR) saw the work of 57 Onkwehón:we artists - painters, photographers, and artisans - displayed for all to see at the Kahnawake Legion Hall last week.
