Warhawks action still to come

Despite some tough playoff losses, Kahnawake playoff baseball is not over yet, with key tournaments upcoming.
The U15B girls Warhawks will be playing in the Baseball Quebec Super Regionals this weekend, on the heels of losing their Quebec Female Baseball League (LBFQ) tournament opener on Saturday in Pierrefonds to the Explosives 7-5. The next day, they won the consolation game against the Gatineau Espoirs White 16-15.
Warhawks’ head coach Roddy Meloche said that the game against the Explosives could have gone either way.
“It was a really good game. It was tied the whole way through,” said Meloche.
“We had one inning where we made a couple of errors, and they capitalized.”
Those errors are what, ultimately, gave the Explosives the edge on the scoreboard.
Playing in the LBFQ tournament was a new experience for everyone on the Warhawks, and Meloche said that it was, at first, a little intimidating.
“Th other team was already there, waiting, stretching, and it was pouring rain, so we didn’t know what we were in for,” said Meloche.
Still, they performed admirably in his eyes, playing a game they could have won had things gone a little differently.
The next day, for the consolation game, the Warhawks found themselves short of players, due in part to illness and hockey tryouts.
They were still able to play, though, thanks to the Gatineau team lending them players.
“The other coach understood,” said Meloche.
“We discussed it before the game. I asked ‘well, what do you want to do?’ By rules, I should have forfeited, but they wanted to play, because they came from Gatineau, it’s too long a drive just to win by forfeit.”
It was a fun game with a lot of hitting, Meloche said, with the Warhawks getting the win in the end.
Now, they move on to the Super Regionals, playing against some of the best teams in the province once again.
With school starting, Meloche said they won’t have much time to work on anything before the tournament.
“I explained to the girls that there’s nothing more we could do. You just have to prepare your mind that day,” said Meloche.
Their first game of the Super Regionals will be today, Friday, at 7:30 p.m. in Ahuntsic-Cartierville against Saguenay Lac-St-Jean.
If they win that game, they advance to the semi-finals played the next day. If they lose, they will move to the bronze section, where they will play another team that lost their opening game and have a chance to advance through that bracket to the “small final” game.
“This weekend, I just hope we are able to compete. They’ve been great. I don’t think they have anything more to prove,” said Meloche of his players.
The Junior A Warhawks saw their Metropolitan Junior A League playoff run end on Sunday, when they lost the second game of their second round best-of-three series to the Saint-Leonard Bucs 1 3-0.
