Sky’s the limit for Sky

Kahnawake’s own Craig Sky is continuing to soar at medical school, this time being recognized with the Elaine Kilabuk Award from McGill University.
Sky jointly won the award alongside fellow medical student Madeline Yaaka, who is Inuk. The award honours Elaine Kilauk, an Inuk graduate of McGill’s medical school.
“Winning this award is an acknowledgement of my academic achievements and my work in Indigenous advocacy at the medical level. It encourages me to work even harder, and to inspire others to find their own way to be an ally or an advocate,” said Sky.
Sky is currently in his fourth year at McGill.
“I love being a McGill student. Throughout my studies I have seen McGill evolve and make adaptations to better accommodate their Indigenous students, there are a few valuable Indigenous staff that work tirelessly to help myself and the other Indigenous students,” he said.
He hopes that other students from Kahnawake will be inspired to become doctors.
“It’s super important to encourage other Indigenous students to pursue medicine since there is currently a large underrepresentation of Indigenous healthcare professionals. We need more of our own treating our own,” he said.
“I am a firm believer that the Creator gives us these amazing gifts and it’s our responsibility to find the best way to optimize them for ourselves and others.”
