Registrations open for minor baseball

It may be cold outside for the moment, but summer will be here faster than you think - and with it, baseball season.

Kahnawake Minor Baseball registrations are now open, and all interested Kahnawa’kehró:non have to do is go to the Sports and Recreation Unit’s offices at the Kahnawake Sports Complex during business hours with the money to register.

“You don’t need to do anything besides that and filling out your child’s information,” said Terry Stacey, president of Kahnawake Minor Baseball.

Stacey said that baseball is an attractive sport for families that might not be able to afford hockey or lacrosse, or can’t make long days of travelling work.

“If you want a sport that’s not too expensive, take a look at baseball,” said Stacey.

“It’s a local sport; everything is done within half an hour of traveling. There is a minimal cost to register, a minimal cost on equipment, and it’s outdoors and keeps the kids active.”

A wide variety of teams are being offered by minor baseball this year, with tee ball for ages 5-7, mixed and girls’ teams from U9 to U21, and a men’s junior team, for players aged 19-22.

First-time players are encouraged to sign up as well, especially on younger teams after tee ball - a player does not have to start in the youngest age group to get their start on the diamond in Kahnawake.

Stacey said that while they don’t necessarily think they will have the numbers to field every team - last year, for example, there was no girls U21 team - they still offer the possibility to sign up, just in case.

Stacey said that while some coaches from last year have already said they will be back in the dugout this year, the association will be looking to fill empty spots on the bench once teams are formed.

“It’s just a matter of how many teams there are. We don’t know until registration is almost done,” said Stacey.

As such, anyone interested in coaching can contact Stacey or Kylene Standup, and they will be contacted if the need arises.

Stacey said that what he’s looking forward to this season is, simply, for it to get started.

“Just start another season, and let the kids have fun.”

The last day to register for the baseball season is Friday, March 28.
