Nothing but net for Juvenile Akweks

A little less than halfway through their season, Kahnawake Survival School (KSS)’s Juvenile boys’ basketball Akweks are still undefeated going into the holiday break - although that came close to no longer being the case on Tuesday afternoon.

In a game that required two overtime periods, the Akweks came out on top of Lower Canada College (LCC) 51-49, by far their mostly tightly contested game of the season, having won their previous three games by an average of 21 points.

Three of their first four games have come on the road, including Tuesday’s thriller.

Their first two games back from break will also be on the road, on January 7 at Royal Vale High School and on January 14 at F.A.C.E. Secondary School.

To have won all of their road games so far, and particularly the double overtime game, showed that this Akweks team is capable of winning in any environment.

“Those games are always challenging; winning a game like we did yesterday builds a lot of character,” said Brandon Bordeau, student engagement and activity facilitator for KSS.

“We still have eight games left, and with only three out of seven teams advancing to the playoffs, we know that each game will count.”

So far, KSS is in a good position to do so. They are the only undefeated team remaining, and the second place team, Beurling Academy, is one they have already won against this year. KSS won their first meeting 44-37, and they will meet again at KSS on February 4.

The Juvenile team is not the only basketball team KSS has this year, although they have not matched their success up to this point.

The girls’ Cadet team has yet to win a game this season in three attempts. Their most recent game was a 64-12 loss to first-place Herzliah High School. Their next game will be after the holiday break on January 9 against Trafalgar School for Girls, who are also winless this year.

The Juvenile girls, meanwhile, are 0-2. Their most recent game was a 58-11 loss to Beaconsfield High School. They too will play against Trafalgar School for Girls next, on January 12. The Juvenile Trafalgar team sits 4-2, first in the division.

The Cadet boys are 1-1, with their most recent game being a 48-24 loss to John F. Kennedy High School. Their next game will be played as the first part of a doubleheader against Royal Vale High School on January 7, with the Juvenile boys playing after them.
