The State University of New York at Albany (UAlbany) Great Danes Division 1 NCAA lacrosse team will be playing their first game of the America East Conference’s Men’s Lacrosse Tournament this Thursday, with Kahnawa’kehró:non laxer Koleton Marquis a big part of the game plan.
Marquis has 21 goals this season, the third-best total on the Great Danes - a strong showing for his first year on the team.
“Lately, I’ve been performing better. I still think that I could be doing more, the consistency has to be there a little more, but I think I’m starting to get in my groove here towards the end of the season,” said Marquis.
That included a very strong performance against the Yale Bulldogs on April 19, where Marquis got a hat trick, including the overtime winner in the 15-14 UAlbany win.
For his efforts, Marquis was named one of the UAlbany Great Danes’ Student-Athletes of the Week following the game.
“I’d be lying to you if I said I wasn’t super pumped, it was a great feeling,” said Marquis of his overtime winner.
“We worked super hard all week in practice, just our prep and just to get ready against them. They’re a good team.”
UAlbany have ended their regular season on a very strong note, with their 18-6 win on April 26 against the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders being their fourth in a row - a great turnaround considering their 3-8 start to the year.
“As the year has gone on, we’ve all been working super hard. We didn’t really have the start that we wanted to at the beginning of the year, which kind of set us back a little bit. But it’s looking like everything’s coming together towards the end of the season,” said Marquis.
Their first game of the postseason on Thursday - which took place after The Eastern Door’s publishing deadline - was against the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Retrievers at 7 p.m. The Great Danes lost their regular season matchup on March 22 13-12, one of three one-goal loses for UAlbany.
“We’re really excited to get another shot against UMBC, because we had a pretty tough fourth quarter against them, where we thought we should have won that game,” said Marquis.
“I think that we’re more elevated as a team. Some of the mistakes that we were making in the beginning of the year, we aren’t making as much anymore.”
