Local hockey in playoff action

The double-loss playoff system the U11A Kahnawake Mohawks play under in the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) has meant that their 5-1 loss to the Verdun Leafs on Saturday was not the end of their playoff road just yet.

“We knew Verdun was going to be tough,” said U11A head coach Mackenzie Kirby.

“In order to be competitive with them, we knew we really had to mind our Ps and Qs and play disciplined hockey.”

Unfortunately for the Mohawks, they took three tripping penalties during the game, and Verdun scored on two of their power play opportunities.

If they have beaten their next opponent, the Montreal West Hockey Knights on Thursday, after The Eastern Door’s publishing deadline, there is a chance they will meet the Leafs again further along in the playoffs, and Kirby thinks they will be ready.

“At even strength, we stuck with them, we skated with them. It’s just a matter of if and when we meet them again, remembering that so we don’t make those same mistakes again,” said Kirby.

The Mohawks have beaten the Knights in both of their regular season matchups, but that doesn’t mean Kirby is treating it like an automatic win.

“The message for our team is not to take anything for granted. It is the playoffs, so anything could happen,” said Kirby.

No matter the result, it has been a good season with a lot of growing, but also a lot of fun, Kirby said.
