    Air quality data now public

    The Kahnawake Environment Protection Office (KEPO) has begun actively monitoring air quality in five different locations in the territory.  The air quality monitors have been set up at the Kahnawake Survival School, on Route 207 by Zachary Road, and on Peter Foxy’s Street near the JFK quarry.

    Chateauguay fuel spill ignites lawsuit 

    The Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) has launched a lawsuit against the City of Chateauguay over the fuel spill that happened in the city's industrial sector this February.  The band council is seeking $500,000 in damages from the city, alleging its fire department was negligent and failed in its duty to manage and control the spread of the fuel from the spill, resulting in “significant fault” toward the community of Kahnawake.

    Tensions mount at JFK Quarry  

    Two sides faced off outside JFK Quarry on Tuesday morning. On one side, at the quarry entrance, stood a crowd of around 15 protestors, bearing handmade signs with slogans like “No More Toxic Stone Dust!” On the other, across the busy Route 207, stood quarry owner Frank McComber, who said that his business isn’t causing contamination in the area.

    Chateauguay site not to blame, Quebec claims 

    Quebec’s environmental ministry confirmed this week it doesn’t believe the recent spill in Chateauguay is to blame for the ongoing cleanup of diesel fuel in Kahnawake.  It’s now been nearly two months since diesel fuel was first discovered in the community in a creek and river near Zachary Road on February 9.
