Tournaments action coming for minor hockey

Hockey season is ramping back up for the Kahnawake Minor Hockey Association (KMHA) following the holiday break, with teams from the association taking part in tournaments and festivals across Quebec and Ontario.

The U21 Junior D Mohawks will be participating in Pierrefonds’ Annual Provincial Tournament, which runs from January 24 to February 1. All games will be played at the Pierrefonds Sportsplex.

The U21 squad has three games scheduled so far for the tournament in the Junior D division: Sunday, January 25, at 8:15 p.m. against the Montreal North Braves; Tuesday, January 27, at 8:45 p.m. against the NDG Cougars; and Saturday, January 31, at 3 p.m. against the St. Eustache Patriots 1.

Semifinals and finals games for Junior D will be played on February 1.

The U11B and U11C Mohawks are currently just outside of Ottawa in Gloucester, Ontario, to take part in the first ever edition of the Blackburn Stingers Classic at the Richcraft Sensplex.

The Blackburn Stingers Classic follows a particular structure, being played over the span of three different weekends depending on the age group – this weekend being for U11.

The U11B Mohawks will be playing their first game of the tournament today, Friday, at 11 a.m. against the Maniwaki Mustangs, followed by a game at 5 p.m. against the Laval Cobras. Tomorrow, Saturday, they’ll play the Hudson-Rigaud-Saint-Lazare Hawks at noon.

For the U11C team, their tournament also starts today, Friday, at 11:45 a.m. against the Aylmer Pionniers. Later in the afternoon, they have a game against the Cumberland Dukes at 5:45 p.m. On Saturday, they’ll be taking on the Akwesasne Wolves at 3:15 p.m.

Playoffs will be determined based on results in these three preliminary games, with the top four teams of each division making it to the semifinals on Sunday. The U11B Mohawks are competing with 13 other teams for one of those spots, while the U11C Mohawks will have to battle with eight other teams.

The U9C Mohawks will be taking part in the Sorel-Tracy U9 Provincial Festival this weekend at the Cardin Coliseum.

Their first game will be tomorrow at noon against the Chaudiere-West Huskies 2. They will play again on Saturday at 6 p.m. against the Richelieu Valley Predateurs 3 and on Sunday at 1 p.m. against the St. Hyacinthe Mousquetaires 2.

Festivals are played on a more casual level and thus do not have playoffs.
