Survival School soccer hits semis
The Juvenile girls’ soccer team at Kahnawake Survival School (KSS) won their last game of the Greater Montreal Athletic Association (GMAA) regular season this past Monday, defeating F.A.C.E. 8-1, for an undefeated finish.
“(F.A.C.E.) is the second-best team in our group,” said head coach and physical education teacher Pierre Tobjian. “They played very defensively, relying heavily on counterattacks. We had plenty of opportunities in the first half but struggled to finish, and it ended 1-1.”
The second half was a different story, with KSS pouring on seven goals.
“The girls really stepped up their effort and determination. We found weaknesses in their defense, moved the ball around more effectively, and were able to capitalize on those opportunities,” said Tobjian.
The victory Monday gave KSS a perfect 6-0 record on the season. The second-year coach said that the team started the season off strong and kept playing well every game.
“The girls have shown incredible perseverance in every game. It’s also been great to see them encouraging and supporting each other throughout the season. I always remind the team to take it one game at a time and, even with an undefeated record, not to underestimate our next opponent and to stay focused and competitive,” said Tobjian.
That same attitude is what he wants the team to bring in their first playoff game this afternoon (Friday), as they face Lower Canada College (LCC) at home at 3:30 p.m.
KSS has not yet played against LCC this season.
Tobjian and assistant coaches Paxton Phillips and Amber Cook hold practice once per week after school, focusing on elements of the game the coaching staff finds were lacking in previous games, along with offensive techniques.
“We work on passing, making crosses into the box, positioning, and finishing. We want the players to be in the right spots at the right time, and to improve their ability to convert chances,” said Tobjian.
Many of the players also practice with the Arrowhead FC Juniors team, giving them more time on the pitch to keep their skills sharp.
All in all, Tobjian is very proud of what the team has accomplished already this season.
“It’s truly inspiring to see what this extraordinary group of girls is capable of when they step on the field. I've witnessed some fantastic teamwork and passing, along with beautifully executed goals in every match,” said Tobjian.
If KSS wins against LCC this Friday, they will move on to the finals on October 29, facing either Westmount school The Study for the first time this year, or playing a rematch against F.A.C.E.
No consolation game will be played, according to Tobjian.

The KSS team won their first GMAA soccer championship in 2022, and made the playoffs again in 2023, although they were unable to repeat as champions after losing 4-1 to eventual champions Rosemere High School in the semifinals.
