In Kahnawake Survival School’s first home volleyball match of the season, the Midget girls wanted to make sure they won both games against Lakeside Tuesday.
The girls controlled most of the two games, winning 25-18 and 25-18.
Survival controlled the game with some solid serving runs from several girls, including rookie Emma Thivierge.
“I was nervous about my serves, but they went over,” she said.
Survival won its first game against Pierrefonds Comprehensive High School 25-14, but let the second game slip, losing 25-23.
The school now has two wins, three ties and two losses on the season, playing in the Midget Girls 4 division.
Each year, Survival needs to reset as experienced players graduate and rookies enter the fold. Veteran Kaycee Diabo is impressed with how quickly the girls have gelled.
“We’re alright for a team that has changed so much this year,” said Diabo. “We went from having half the team of veterans to mostly new girls, so it’s very different, and we moved age levels.”
Thivierge has been at Survival for two years, and is playing volleyball for the first time this season.
“They’re a good team,” she said. “It’s pretty fun.”
Diabo expected the new girls to need more time to develop, but found they picked up the basics of the game quickly.
“I was kind of surprised because I wasn’t expecting them to catch on that fast, but they did,” said Diabo. “The first two practices, they were already getting everything down.”
Heading into the October 23 match day in Pierrefonds, Survival has a good chance to move up in the standings with a solid day. Thivierge feels if the girls talk more on the court and tighten up their mistakes, the team could come away with some good results.
“Definitely communicating sometimes, like calling the ball,” said Thivierge.
