I’m not entirely sure. I have a feeling, though, that everyone remembers their first encounter with gold lamé. I do understand that one may not always be given to sitting at home pondering one’s earliest recollection of Lurex, which is probably for the best.
That being said: gold is bold. It makes a lasting statement, and if it’s shiny enough you basically provide your own lighting. Forget filters, highlighting, and contouring, gals. You’re done.
I think that sounded like something Gina from Brooklyn 99 would say. I sure hope so. Anyway.

I first donned a gold frock on some frosty winter’s evening around 1989 or so and sang a solo at a Christmas concert. It felt almost like pulling on a suit of armour, with a wide sash with wire in it that made a great big bow in the back.
It had a stiff and scratchy shimmering gold top with slightly puffed cap sleeves, and the skirt was white tulle with gold glitter scattered through it.
I mean nothing will get you geared up to sing that high squeaky part of Silent Night like a gold dress. Think of Taylor Swift in Gucci at the Grammies. It’s all about harnessing your star power.
Apparently the trend for FW 15/16 is a nod to the late 70s and early 80s. However, there are examples in almost every fashion era of fearless figures wearing gilded gowns, which leads me to believe it is a timeless look. A timeless look not always available in stores, that is.
If you don’t believe me, just think of Elvis Presley in his epic gold suit or Marilyn Monroe in Gentleman Prefer Blondes. Also late 90s hip hop music videos, where everyone is in metallics and inside a sci-fi movie set.
The key is to look cool though, not kitsch; classy, not caricature. As usual, it’s all about your styling. Here’s how to break it down:
Bust apart a gold suit:
If your destination is a little more low key, but you still want to stand out, try separates. A simple gold top with cap sleeves, a fitted gold blazer, or a pair of metallic pants look great paired with denim, chunky knits, or even tweed. Mixing textures feels luxurious yet not too fussy.
Kick up your heels:
The easiest way to get in on the trend day or night is with a pair of gilt shoes. Chunky ultra glittery 70s platforms will bring your jumpsuit to the next level for New Year’s, while a pair of sparkly gold sneakers will light up your weekend Christmas shopping trips, carrying you through in comfort. I don’t see why they can’t also double as Christmas ornaments in a pinch.
Ms. Midas:
Everything you touch turns to gold, so why not just own it and wear a full gold gown already. There may not or may not be red carpet events to attend so adjust your hemline to suit your event.
If you are not sure about calling attention to any lumps and bumps that may show through, be sure to choose a dress in a thicker structured fabric that hugs the body but doesn’t cling.
Keep an eye on your hair and makeup for this. Simple and sleek is best with minimal makeup, allowing the dress to do its thing. Pale pink and nudes are harmonious.
Whatever you choose, get ready to turn heads, put smiles on peoples faces, and get parties started- this is the height of holiday glamour. After all, what are the holidays without shiny happy people?
